According to information broadcast by Public Television of Angola, 25% of the 500 soldiers who will be sent to support peacekeeping in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will be women. The decision to send the Angolan contingent was taken after discussion and voting in the National Assembly, in an extraordinary plenary session held this Friday, March 17.
The request for authorization from the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, to send the contingent to the DRC was unanimously approved with 178 votes in favor and the group of Angolan soldiers who will remain in that region for about a year have the mission of securing the cantonment areas of the rebel troops of the M23 and ensure the integrity of the elements that are part of the verification mechanism of the “ceasefire” process.
